Dear Members of the UCSF Academic Senate,

The Executive Council of the UCSF Academic Senate fully supports the recent statement from UCSF Chancellor Sam Hawgood regarding President Trump’s executive order on immigration.

Under the principled leadership of Chancellor Hawgood, UCSF has responded to the announcement of the President’s action with a strong statement supporting students, faculty, scholars, trainees, and staff and reaffirming our values.

We reiterate Chancellor Hawgood’s unequivocal statement that the President’s executive order on immigration is antithetical to UCSF’s core values.

“We at UCSF are committed to attaining a culture in which every individual is treated respectfully and fairly regardless of her or his religion or national origin, and we hold dear the very principles on which this country was founded: freedom and the opportunity for all members of society to achieve their dreams. It also is important to emphasize that the mission of UCSF is to advance health worldwide. While we make our home in the Bay Area, UCSF is a global community that thrives on the interaction between faculty, students, trainees and staff from different cultures, backgrounds and beliefs. At our core, we believe deeply in the free flow of information and knowledge that comes from global engagement.”

UCSF is unified by our shared commitment to professionalism, respect, integrity, diversity, and excellence. In recognition of the many people around the world who are experiencing fear and uncertainty due to the President’s action, the San Francisco Division of the UC Academic Senate will redouble our efforts to protect and advance our common set of values.

We appreciate the Chancellor’s response and for the Chancellor’s leadership team for their work to understand the implications of the President’s Executive Order.

Sincerely,

Ruth Greenblatt Signature
