2024-2025 Academic Senate Distinguished Faculty Awards

The UCSF Academic Senate is happy to announce the faculty selected by their peers as the 2025 Distinction in Teaching and Distinction in Mentoring Award winners. An event to recognize their efforts will be held on Friday, April 25, 2025, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Mission Bay Campus, in Byers Auditorium, Genentech Hall. The Spring 2025 Academic Senate Distinction in Teaching Award for faculty at UCSF for five years or fewer goes to Jaya Mallidi, MD, an Associate Clinical Professor in Cardiology. She is the Director of Inpatient Cardiology and Site Director for the UCSF Cardiology Fellowship at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG)/UCSF. She is the recipient of the 2023 Patricia Cornett Subspecialty Faculty Teaching Award UCSF. In 2024, she won the Floyd C. Rector Award for Excellence in Teaching.

The Spring 2025 recipient of the Academic Senate Distinction in Teaching Award for faculty at UCSF for over five years is Elizabeth A. Joyce, PhD. Dr. Joyce is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology with a joint appointment in Cell and Tissue Biology at the School of Dentistry. She directs the Microbiology Teaching Laboratory in the School of Medicine and advises the Dental Bridges Student Organization. She serves as a test item constructor for the Integrated National Board Dental Examination. With expertise in curricular design, she co-chairs the Integrated Foundational Sciences Workstream, playing a key role in the 2027 Curriculum Redesign Initiative for the School of Dentistry.

The Spring 2025 recipient of the Academic Senate Distinction in Mentoring Award for faculty at the rank of Associate Professor is Marissa Raymond-Flesch, MD, MPH. Dr. Raymond-Flesch is an Associate Professor in the Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies (IHPS) and the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine within the Department of Pediatrics. Her transformative mentorship was recognized with the prestigious ARCHES mid-career development award. Her mentorship has directly contributed to significant academic achievements, as her mentees have secured competitive research funding and prestigious faculty appointments, expanding their impacts in their fields.

The Spring 2025 recipient of the Academic Senate Distinction in Mentoring Award for faculty at the rank of Full Professor is Laurence Huang, MD. Dr. Huang is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy, and Sleep Medicine and the Division of HIV, Infectious Diseases, and Global Medicine. He has been an active and dedicated research mentor to trainees at all levels, from faculty peers and fellows to high school students and international scholars in Uganda. Dr. Huang helped establish new mentoring programs, including the UCSF Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) Mentor Development Program (MDP) and has held many mentoring leadership roles, including serving as one of two founding Co-Directors of Faculty Mentoring and Sponsorship in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy, and Sleep Medicine.


To select each year’s awards, the Academic Senate Committee on Academic Personnel designates selection committees comprised of faculty and student representatives from all four schools. Student representatives are recommended by the Associate Deans in Student Affairs from each of the respective Schools. Faculty representatives are recommended by the Associate Deans of Academic Affairs from each School.
