UCSF Academic Senate Faculty Research Lectures
2025-2026 Call for Nominations

The Academic Senate Committee on Research is accepting nominations for the 2025-2026 Faculty Research Lectures. The deadline to submit a nomination is June 2, 2025. Submit nominations via the Senate Service Portal (SSP) here.

This award acknowledges outstanding scientific achievements made by members of the UCSF Academic Senate in three areas:

  1. Basic Science
  2. Clinical Science
  3. Social, Behavioral, and Health Policy Sciences

Nominators should state the best-fitting category for the candidate’s research within the cover page of the application.

  • Translational researchers may be nominated in either the Basic Science or Clinical Science category, depending on which is the better fit for their research.
  • Clinical researchers that address social and behavioral issues may be nominated in either the Clinical Science or the Social, Behavioral, and Health Policy Sciences category, depending on which is a better fit for their research.

The awardees are chosen based on their impacts and achievements over the course of their entire careers.

The Committee on Research particularly encourages nominations of faculty from historically excluded groups and those underrepresented in medicine and science.

Instructions

Submit one PDF document via the Senate Service Portal including the following:

  • A cover page containing the nominee’s name, degree(s), title, department(s), school affiliations(s), and the FRL award category (Basic Science, Clinical Science, or Social, Behavioral, and Health Policy Sciences) that best fits the nominee's research;
  • A one-page letter summarizing the most outstanding achievements of the nominee’s scientific career (this cover letter does not count as one of the faculty letters of support);
  • Two letters of support from individual UCSF faculty (one of the letters may be from the faculty member submitting the nomination); and
  • A current curriculum vitae.

Please note:

  • The nominator (or one of the authors of a letter of support) must be available to meet with the Committee on Research for a 5-minute discussion about the nomination, where the nominator will present their case for their nominee and answer any questions, at its meeting on Monday, June 16, 2025 (3-5 pm) via Zoom.
  • If a nominee is selected for the award, the information in the nominee’s packet, including the letters, may be used in the creation of materials promoting the event.

Previously submitted nomination packets will be reconsidered as-is if the nominator verifies that those providing letters of support still agree to do so. If you wish to re-nominate a faculty using the prior packet, please re-submit the original packet with a statement confirming the letters of support. Please note that it may be advantageous to update the nomination packet with a current CV and updated letters of support.

Please contact Liz Greenwood (liz.greenwood@ucsf.edu) with questions.

Yes. Previously submitted nomination packets will be reconsidered as-is if the nominator verifies that those providing letters of support still agree to do so. You can re-submit the original packet with a statement confirming the letters of support. However, please note that it may be advantageous to update the nomination packet with a current CV and updated letters of support.
The Faculty Research Lecture is a career award – nominees are evaluated based on the breadth of their accomplishments in research over the course of their entire careers. We encourage you to describe the impacts of the nominees’ scientific accomplishments within their field of study. These impacts may include not only scientific progress but also contributions to the research community (e.g., the careers of their mentees). For more information, you can watch a short video with tips for nominating colleagues for University Awards.
The Committee on Research recognizes that some researchers may fit into more than one category. For example, translational research may span the Basic and Clinical Science categories, and clinical researchers that addresses social and behavioral issues may fit into either the Clinical Science or the Social, Behavioral, and Health Policy Sciences category. In these cases, you are asked to use your judgment to determine the best-fitting category. Please be assured that if multiple categories are a potential fit, the choice of one category over the other will not be disqualifying.
