The Academic Senate is pleased to announce this year’s recipients of the Distinction In Teaching and the Distinction In Mentoring Awards.

Distinction In Mentoring: Alexander Smith, MD, MS, MPH & Christine Ritchie, MD, MSPH

Recipients of the Academic Senate Distinction In Teaching Awards and the Distinction In Mentoring Awards will be honored at the Senate’s Distinguished Faculty Awards Ceremony on Thursday, May 16 at 3:30 p.m. in the Faculty-Alumni House on the Parnassus campus.

Distinguished Faculty Awards May 16, 2019To select each year’s Distinction in Teaching Award the Academic Senate Committee on Academic Personnel designates a selection committee comprised of faculty and student representatives from all four schools. Student representatives are assigned by Associate Deans from each of the respective Schools.


For 2019, the Academic Senate Distinction in Teaching Award for faculty at UCSF five years or fewer goes to Pinelopi Xenoudi, DDS, MS, Health Sciences Associate Clinical Professor, Division of Periodontology, Department of Orofacial Sciences, School of Dentistry (SOD) and the Director, UCSF Postgraduate Residency Program in Periodontology. Dr. Xenoudi is based at Parnassus campus.

The 2019 Academic Senate Distinction in Teaching Award for faculty at UCSF more than five years goes to Andrea K. Marmor, MD, MSEd, Health Sciences Clinical Professor, Department of Pediatrics, SOM, and Medical Director for the ZSFG Asthma/Allergy Clinic. Dr. Marmor is based at ZSFG.

The Distinction In Mentoring Award Selection Committee is appointed by the Associate Deans in the respective Schools, and is Chaired by a member of the Committee on Academic Personnel. The selection committee is comprised of four Associate Professors and four full Professors, one of each from each school.

The 2019 recipient of the Academic Senate Distinction In Mentoring Award for faculty at the Associate rank is Alexander Smith, MD, MS, MPH, Associate Professor, Division of Geriatrics, Department of Medicine, SOM. Dr. Smith is also the Co-Director of UCSF’s National Institute on Aging T32 research training program.  Dr. Smith plays a leading role in recruiting candidates from diverse backgrounds to conduct geriatrics and palliative care research. Dr. Smith is based at the VAMC. 

The 2019 recipient of the Academic Senate Distinction In Mentoring Award for faculty at the rank of full Professor is Christine Ritchie, MD, MSPH, Harris Fishbon Distinguished Professor of Clinical Translational Research & Aging, Division of Geriatrics, Department of Medicine, SOM, and the Professor In Residence at UC San Francisco. She co-chairs the NIH-funded Palliative Care Research Cooperative and directs its Investigator Development Center. She co-directs the National Home-based Primary Care and Palliative Care Consortium and the Tideswell Emerging Leaders in Aging Program. Dr. Ritchie is based at the Laurel Heights campus.
