Clinical Excellence Awards

  • 12 awards: 1 for an Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor at each of the 4 Schools
  • $1,000 per recipient if funding is not lost  
  • Open to all faculty of all series, levels of seniority, schools, and practice sites who provide clinical care. This includes volunteer faculty and faculty with appointments below 100%.

Call for Nominations

Eligibility: This award is open to all UCSF appointed faculty (across all series, levels of seniority, schools, and practice sites) who are actively practicing clinical care.

Nomination Process:

  1. Nominee’s clinical achievements: Please use the “Nomination Form” (found below) to describe the nominee’s clinical activities and achievements.
  2. Nominator: must be a faculty member who can make a strong assessment of the nominee’s clinical skills. Nominations can be made by multiple faculty members; if this is the case, one nomination letter should be written and signed by all nominators. Nominations must be endorsed by the Departmental Chair or Divisional Chief of the nominee. 

Key Attributes of Considered Nominees:

  • Demonstrates excellent clinical acumen, including diagnostic acumen, clinical expertise, and ability to expertly counsel patients/families.
  • Someone who seeks to expand their knowledge in service of clinical care.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills when working with patients as well as all team members and staff.
  • Commitment to innovation within the clinical realm, whether through implementing improved clinical pathways, streamlining patient care experiences, undertaking novel quality improvement initiatives, or the like.

Nomination Letter Requirements

  • Submit 1 letter in addition to the short nomination form above.
  • The letter can be authored by one or multiple nominees/fellow faculty members.
  • The letter/nomination must be endorsed by the nominee’s Chief\Chair.
  • 2-page limit – font size 11, borders 1”, signatures of nominators/chair do not count toward the page limit.
  • Letter must include the outstanding qualities as a clinician. Examples can include:
    • awards received;
    • creation of patient care programs or activities;
    • creation of innovative quality care programs for improving patient care outcomes;
    • patient satisfaction (e.g., patient comments or testimonials);
    • ability to work well in a team environment;
    • recommendations from team members at different levels/specialties/roles, seen as a clinical role model by peers;
    • specific examples/anecdotes/stories are encouraged.

  • 2. Prepare a nomination packet. Nomination packets must include nomination letter and nomination form as one single PDF document.
  • 3. Login to the Academic Senate Service Portal, select Awards/Nominate and submit the nomination packet.
  • 4. Deadline is Friday, October 31, 2025.
