Faculty Learning and Development Guidelines - School of Dentistry
Dear SOD Faculty:
We wanted to advise you of three different Academic Senate small funding opportunities: the Learning & Development Funds and two types of Travel Funds. Depending on the awards’ differing criteria, all or some may be available to you. Please review broad criteria listed below or follow the links to the Senate website.
These will be open for application on Monday, January 22, 2018.
Available funds can be used to defray the cost attending, for example, a conference or a learning workshop. In some cases, funds can be used to cover registration for said conferences.
Further, the Learning & Development pathway can be used to support initiatives like a new mentoring programs or a brown bag lecture series within your group or department. Faculty from other schools have used L&D funds to participate in a mid-career professional development program, or in a strategic decision-making workshop, or to acquire leadership coaching.
The Senate encourages SOD faculty to think “outside the box” for the Learning & Development pathway.
An alternative source of funding is the SOD Dean’s Office Development Funds: https://dentistry.ucsf.edu/faculty . This is entirely separate from the Senate however, and has a different application process.
For more information on the different Academic Senate funding opportunities, please read the below:
The UCSF Academic Senate offers Learning & Development Funds to any faculty at 50% time or higher (Ladder Rank, In Residence, Clinical X, Adjunct, or HS Clinical, and any rank).
The funds are intended to give all faculty members an opportunity to participate in a broad range of development activities. These include, but are not limited to, formal training courses to improve teaching or to develop new professional skills; leadership development programs; academic and training courses; leadership programs; conferences; and external professional development consultation. Preference will be given to applications that benefit other faculty and/or the school.
You can apply as an individual faculty member, or as a group of up to four SOD faculty.
The only requirement beyond percent time is that when you return to UCSF after the learning opportunity, you disseminate what you learned in either a brown bag lecture, a Departmental meeting, or some other method.
You must be a minimum of 50% time faculty member in order to apply.
Awards are given in a range from $2000 - $5000 and have a set application deadline each Spring. Award notifications are made roughly three-four weeks after the spring deadline. If applying as a team of up to four faculty, maximum amount that can be received is $20,000.

The Academic Senate also has two sets of Travel Grants: these are open to all faculty, as long as there exists a 50% appointment.
The first Travel Grants are for amounts up to $500 for new or junior faculty who’ve been at UCSF under 5 years. This is for travel to attend meetings of learned societies, organized conferences and meetings to present important results of original research. Faculty with 50% appointments or higher are eligible to apply. Funds are provided in two cycles annually (January 1 – June 30, and July 1 – December 31) based on available funding on a first come, first served basis. http://senate.ucsf.edu/0-funding/as-travelgrants.html
Separately, through the Chancellor’s Fund, the Senate has Travel Grants specifically for attendance at research- or education curriculum-focused conference. Faculty at UCSF more than 5 years can apply for the research funds, while faculty at all levels can apply for the education curriculum-focused funds. Maximum reimbursement is $2,000. https://senate.ucsf.edu/chancellors-fund/travel-grants-2017
