The meeting of the Committee on Research was called to order by Chair Cleaver on September 19, 2001 at 8:45 am in Room A119. A quorum was present.

Announcement from the Chair

Chair Cleaver informed the Committee that Regis Kelly, PhD has been appointed as Executive Vice-Chancellor for Research. He will replace Zach Hall, PhD who submitted his resignation from the position. Chair Cleaver noted that the Committee will work closely with Vice-Chancellor Kelly’s office and will invite him to attend a future meeting of the Committee to discuss key issues which will require discussion in the year ahead.

Review of Nominations for the First Distinguished Clinical Research Lectureship

The remainder of the meeting consisted of the review of eight nominations for the First Distinguished Clinical Research Lectureship. Nominations were received for:

Michalel Harrison, MD
Thomas Coates, PhD
Curtis Morris, MD
Walter Miller, MD
Deborah Greenspan, DSC, BDS
Steve Cummings, MD, FACP
Eric Small, MD
James Barkovich, MD

Following review and discussion of all applicants, the Committee voted by secret ballot to approve the selection of Steve Cummings, MD, FACP, Professor of Medicine, Director, UCSF Coordinating Center, Director, UCSF Clinical Research Program and Associate Chair of Medicine for Clinical Research as the 1st Distinguished Clinical Research Lecturer.
