CHAIR’S REPORT/ANNOUNCEMENTS

Chair Hoener reviewed the 00-01 EQOP Annual Report with the Committee, summarizing in particular the Search Committee Ambassador proposal.

OLD BUSINESS

Search Committee Ambassador Proposal: Chair Hoener reported on a recent meeting with Vice Chancellor D. Bainton regarding the ambassador proposal. Committee Vice Chair D. Wara and D. Dillon, Director of the Academic Personnel office, also attended. At that meeting, VC Bainton said that it was improbable any funding would be available to support the proposed staff ambassador position, and the group discussed alternatives. It was proposed that the Committee audit a group of existing searches. At the end of the meeting, VC Bainton provided to Chair Hoener copies of search committees assembled in the past 2-3 months.

The Committee discussed VC Bainton’s suggestion. Committee members decided to create a questionnaire and contact search committee chairs to gather data. Chair Hoener will work with Senate staff to draft a letter of introduction and some recommended questions for search committees that will be distributed to the Committee for comment before the November EQOP meeting. The Committee will also recommend that gender and minority hiring and retention data be included in the stewardship reviews of department chairs. The School of Medicine may already be collecting such data due to an AAMC reporting requirement, and the Committee will determine if the other schools are doing anything similar. In addition, the Committee will work to gather information on resources for search committees, such as minority health sciences organizations, and make that information easily available to search committees and those who place ads.

Faculty Handbook: D. Wara will be taking the lead on revisions to the faculty handbook. Committee members received copies of current handbook. Chair Hoener requested that each member review the handbook as each member will be working to assess and potentially edit one or more sections.

NEW BUSINESS

None.

The meeting adjourned at 3:00 p.m.
