Lawrence H. Pitts MD

Brief Biography

Lawrence Pitts is currently a Professor of Neurosurgery at UCSF, where he has been a member of the faculty since the completion of his residency in 1975. He received his undergraduate education at MIT with dual Bachelor's degrees in Electrical Engineering and in Industrial Management. After two years as a Radio Officer in the Navy, he attended medical school at Case Western Reserve University before coming to San Francisco.

He has served as Chief of Neurosurgery at the San Francisco General Hospital and at UCSF/Mount Zion and was Chief of Staff at SFGH. He served for a number of years as Vice-Chair of Neurosurgery and for one year as Acting Chair. He has been an elected member of the Clinical Provider’s Organization Board of Directors on two occasions. For six years, he was Chair of the American Brain Injury Consortium, a multi-center group formed to conduct clinical trials in patients with severe head injury. Dr. Pitts’ academic interests are in neurotrauma, acoustic neuroma and skull base surgery.

Dr. Pitts has been active in the Academic Senate since 1992 when he was appointed to UCSF’s Faculty Welfare Committee. He eventually became Vice-Chair and Chair. In the latter capacity, he served as UCSF’s representative to UCFW from 1993-96, and was UCFW’s Chair in 1995-96. During this year he was also a member of the Academic Council. He was UCSF’s Division Vice-Chair 1997-99 (and a member of the Academic Planning and Budget Committee) and is currently filling out his term as Chair of the San Francisco Division in a term that will expire in August 2001. As Division Chair he has also been a member of the Academic Council for a 2-year period ending in 2001. As UCSF’s Senate Chair, Dr. Pitts is also a member of the Chancellor’s Cabinet and the Executive Budget Committee.

Other statewide Academic Senate work has included: membership on the Executive Vice President’s Ad Hoc Advisory Group; Clinical Enterprises Role in UC Medical Plans (1996); the Senate’s Task Force on Shared Governance (1997); the Medical Insurance Plan Bid Advisory Group (1997-99);); UCFW’s Task Force on Healthcare (2000-present) and chair of a task force charged with drafting the UC Health Corporate Compliance Plan (2000).
